Reading is the fundamental skill every child needs for success in school. That’s why the Every Child a Reader partnership of educational and civic organizations is dedicated to promoting reading aloud with children every day.
Reading aloud is a simple, enjoyable activity for everyone—family members and others who care for children. Yet it truly has a profound effect. Reading aloud helps children get ready for kindergarten and helps them learn to read better and better as they progress through elementary school.
In Seattle we’ve made great strides in helping more kids read at grade level, but our work is not done! Overall, one child in five is still not meeting the fourth grade state standard for reading proficiency. Twice as many children from low-income families, and from families of color, are still below grade level.
